The Return of the Key reviewed by Crystal’s Many Reviewers
Thanks to Kim Talks Tomes and the team at Crystal’s Many Reviewers for an amazing review of The Return of the Key. Here’s what Kim had to say about the early teen fantasy story:
This book is a beautifully written story that broke my heart. Eliza is a mixed race girl who lives with her grandparents. Eliza and her grandmother are sent away to England because of the racial discord going on on their island. It is there that she meets her new friend Gwen who is part fairy. I can’t give more away because you need to read the story to see where it goes, but I don’t think anyone will be disappointed spending the time to read it.
The Return of the Key is about more than a fantasy storyline. There is heartache, friendship, love, trust, and racial discussions all within this story. The author weaves a story full of depth and warmth – something that is not easy to find in a YA book. Eliza is full of so much self-doubt that she questions herself in everything. Gwen is a mixed race girl, also, and is an outcast in her own world. Their differences allow them to be shunned and treated terribly, but their friendship does not see those things that make them “different”. It’s not something most of us think about, but it does exist and affects so many young people in our world.
I really think this book is well worth the time to read. Just be prepared to ride a rollercoaster of emotions while reading.
